(VIDEO) Vintage film shows concrete's role in the 1930s construction of the Pennsylvania Turnpike
Concrete played a big role in the development of quicker travel in the United States, especially prior to the construction of the Interstate network. In this vintage film produced by the Portland Cement Association, we see how concrete was used for things like tunnels, bridges and the road surface of the Pennsylvania Turnpike, built in the late 1930s and opening in 1940. It's an interesting snapshot of the equipment and methods used for placing and treating concrete for road surfaces and structures in that era.
