Liebherr-Werk Nenzing GmbH has been awarded an ESTA Award, the highest distinction for the crane and heavy-lift industry, in the Safety category for its safety system designed to protect crawler cranes working on floating units.

Normally, load charts for operating on a floating unit are only available on paper, without a load moment limitation integrated into the control system. The risk of overloading or losing crane stability is increased. To minimize the risks, a "floating unit operation" mode is applied. The operating mode contains load curves for different heeling angles, with corresponding protection via the load moment limitation. Barge inclination is monitored during the entire operation and displayed to the crane operator. If the permissible limit value is exceeded, a corresponding warning is issued. Additionally, it prevents the maximum boom angle from being exceeded when the load is set down.

The Vertical Line Finder system from Liebherr also plays a part. It enables the crane operator to automatically avoid all inclined lifts at the touch of a button, especially those caused by changes in the barge inclination as a result of the shift in the centre of gravity when lifting and setting down the load.

"The award is a recognition of our efforts to design safe cranes and construction machines - especially as it is the second award in this category since 2022. As a leading manufacturer of cranes, the safety of job site personnel is of the utmost importance to us. Our digital solutions and assistance systems are a direct result of this commitment," said  Gerhard Frainer, Managing Director for Sales at Liebherr-Werk Nenzing GmbH.
