XCMG to supply Fortescue with over $400 million in zero-emissions mining equipment
The collaboration aims to drive global environmental protection and advance green economy initiatives
Fortescue has partnered with XCMG to acquire more than 100 pieces of zero-emissions heavy mobile equipment in a deal valued at over $400 million. This agreement represents XCMG's largest mining equipment contract outside China. The delivery will include battery-electric wheel loaders, wheel dozers, water carts, float prime movers, and graders, all destined for Fortescue's Pilbara mining operations in Australia by 2030.
The use of this equipment will eliminate millions of litres of fossil fuels from Fortescue's iron ore operations over the life cycle of the assets, with the first pieces of equipment expected to be deployed from 2026.
Publicly announced at bauma CHINA, XCMG and Fortescue have forged a long-term partnership based on shared values, cultural alignment, and mutual benefits. This collaboration is poised to make a substantial impact on global environmental protection and contribute to the development of a sustainable, green economy.
"We're moving rapidly to decarbonize our Pilbara iron ore operations and eliminate our Scope 1 and 2 terrestrial emissions by 2030. To achieve this target, we will need to swap out hundreds of pieces of diesel mining equipment at the end of their life with zero-emissions alternatives," says Dino Otranto, CEO of Fortescue Metals. "We're thrilled to partner with XCMG to supply and support cutting-edge battery electric mining equipment, marking another significant step forward in our decarbonization journey. As the global mining industry continues to evolve, we're proud to be at the forefront of driving innovation in value-adding green technology and showing the world that industry can decarbonize."
