Volvo Trucks North America has announced two major product innovations intended to improve regional haul operations in North America: the all-new Volvo VNR truck and the D13 Variable Geometry Turbo (VGT) engine. Designed to power the new truck, the new D13 VGT engine is set as the standard powertrain in all new Volvo VNR models and available as an option for customers selecting the Volvo VNL day cab.

The next-gen for the regional haul market

Built for regional and urban delivery, the redesigned Volvo VNR introduces a 90 percent overhaul compared to its predecessors in the VN series. With enhanced safety technologies, fuel efficiency improvements, and expanded customization options, the new model is engineered to support the diverse and evolving needs of today's fleets.

Developed for adaptability, the all-new Volvo VNR is available in a range of Class 8 configurations—including 4x2, 6x2, and 6x4 tractors, as well as straight truck variants — to align with the operational needs of diverse fleet applications.

  • VNR 300 - Designed for regional haul and urban delivery, the VNR 300 offers exceptional manoeuvrability with a tight wall-to-wall turning radius, making it one of the most agile Class 8 trucks on the market.
  • VNR 440 - A compact mid-roof 42" sleeper that balances drivability with comfort, ideal for drivers needing rest during mandatory breaks or occasional overnight trips.
  • VNR 640 - A 62" mid-roof sleeper tailored for multi-day routes, including bulk haul and flatbed operations where weight sensitivity is a factor.
  • VNR 660 - The most spacious model in the VNR lineup, this 62" high-roof sleeper combines highway-optimized aerodynamics with the manoeuvrability of a regional truck. It's well suited for fleets operating in areas with length restrictions that still require sleeper functionality.
  • VNR Straight Truck - Available in any cab size across the 300, 440, 640, and 660 models, the straight truck variant supports a broad range of body types, including box vans, flatbeds, roll backs, expeditors, and tankers—delivering flexibility for a spectrum of vocational and delivery applications.

A new driver experience

Driver comfort is fundamental in the new design. The interior is available in two trim levels — Core and Edge. The cab of the all-new Volvo VNR has been redesigned with an emphasis on reducing driver fatigue and improving day-to-day functionality. Ergonomically positioned controls are now housed within a wraparound dashboard layout, allowing drivers to access key functions without unnecessary reach or distraction. Redesigned seating includes multiple comfort levels and repositioned seat controls for easier adjustment while seated.

Visibility enhancements include a more aerodynamic windshield with aggressive curvature to reduce drag while improving the driver's field of vision. Optional camera monitor systems replace traditional side mirrors, offering a wider view and reducing blind spots, especially in low-light or high-traffic conditions.

Storage has also been optimized throughout the cab, with smart placement of compartments and multi-use spaces designed to accommodate long-haul essentials. In sleeper models, Volvo introduces reclining mattresses—an industry first in Class 8 trucks—along with an overlapping blackout curtain system that creates a darker, quieter sleep environment. Additional amenities such as adjustable lighting and climate control further support driver comfort during mandated rest periods or overnight hauls.

A focus on safety

The new VNR is outfitted with Volvo's proprietary Active Safety Platform, featuring driver assistance systems such as forward collision warning, lane departure alert, and automatic emergency braking. Optional packages extend these capabilities with blind spot monitoring, dynamic steering assistance, and infrared-supported camera systems for improved visibility in low-light environments.

A key update is the integration of a 24-volt electrical architecture, which supports a broad array of new systems while improving component reliability and reducing electrical failures. This architecture facilitates faster diagnostics, enabling proactive service scheduling and reducing unscheduled downtime.

Is Volvo's D13 VGT the next-generation powertrain?

Supporting the launch of the all-new VNR, Volvo has introduced the new D13 VGT engine, which is now standard on the VNR and available as an option in the redesigned Volvo VNL day cab. The engine builds on previous innovations in the D13 series — particularly the Turbo Compound variant — while introducing new technologies to prioritize fuel efficiency, performance, and longevity.

Several mechanical enhancements distinguish the new D13 VGT engine. Among them is a revised seven-wave piston design that improves combustion by optimizing the air-fuel mixture. This update enhances engine efficiency and contributes to lower emissions by dispersing heat more evenly and reducing peak combustion temperatures.

The D13 VGT engine features smaller, faster-reacting fuel injector valves to enable more precise fuel atomization and a variable displacement oil pump that adapts output based on the engine's real-time needs. These refinements reduce parasitic losses, extend component life, and improve fuel economy.

Like the VNR, the D13 VGT engine also operates on Volvo's 24-volt electrical platform, which supports better integration of powertrain and safety systems. When compared to the previous generation, the new engine delivers up to 3 percent greater fuel efficiency.

Buyers of the new Volvo VNR will also have the option to select the D13 Turbo Compound engine. This engine includes a waste heat recovery system, maximizing energy use and engine output, especially in long-haul highway conditions.

Enhanced uptime and connected services

Volvo's product innovations extend beyond hardware. Both the VNR and the D13 VGT engine benefit from Volvo's connectivity ecosystem, including the Volvo Connect fleet portal, MyTruck app, and access to Certified Uptime Dealerships. These digital tools assist fleet owners in remotely monitoring vehicle performance, streamlining maintenance, and reducing the total cost of ownership.

With predictive service schedules, real-time data reporting, and a dedicated Fleet Manager for concierge-level service coordination, Volvo aims to minimize unplanned downtime and improve operational predictability, especially critical in time-sensitive delivery environments.

A different approach to regional haul innovation

The new Volvo VNR and D13 VGT, with advanced aerodynamics, modular cab configurations, powertrain efficiency, and safety technology, offer an integrated solution that aligns with both operational goals and regulatory expectations.

While the two innovations can be implemented independently, their combined capabilities provide a compelling value proposition for fleets seeking to modernize, optimize, and future-proof their operations.
