Volvo CE and Unicontrol partner to deliver integrated 3D machine control for excavators
New collaboration brings flexible, open-platform technology to more contractors

Volvo Construction Equipment (Volvo CE) and Danish software firm Unicontrol have announced a strategic partnership meant to enhance accessibility and flexibility in 3D machine control technology for excavators. The collaboration is expected to simplify integration for contractors while supporting mixed fleets and streamlining workflows.
The Unicontrol 3D system will initially launch in select European markets later this year, with plans for broader global availability in the future. Integrated into Volvo CE's Co-Pilot interface, the system bypasses the complexities of traditional machine control setups. When Co-Pilot is factory-ordered with Dig Assist, operators can use Unicontrol 3D features by activating the software, with no extra hardware or monitors needed.
Breaking away from closed tech ecosystems
This move reflects an increasing industry demand for open platforms and interoperable technologies. Unlike many legacy machine control systems that operate within closed ecosystems, Unicontrol 3D supports integration with a range of excavator types, data formats, and construction workflows.
"We are committed to making advanced technology open, accessible, and easy to use. CoPilot is an open platform where we welcome partners to join us in delivering innovative solutions," says Kurt Deleu, Head of Product Management for Excavators at Volvo CE. This allows contractors to avoid vendor lock-in and optimize performance across equipment brands.
Lowering the barrier to 3D machine control
For Volvo CE, the partnership aligns with its broader objective to create a more open and user-centric digital environment across its equipment lineup. By incorporating Unicontrol's modular and flexible software into its existing Dig Assist offering, Volvo CE is expanding the range of technology choices available to contractors managing diverse fleets with varying technology requirements.
Unicontrol's approach to 3D machine control emphasizes simplicity, adaptability, and cost efficiency, making it well-suited for small to mid-sized contractors looking to digitalize their operations without significant capital investment. The system's ability to integrate into existing workflows also reduces the learning curve for operators and helps minimize downtime during adoption.
Collaboration for smarter, flexible construction tech
This partnership underscores a broader trend toward open collaboration among OEMs and tech providers, enabling more scalable and future-ready job sites. By combining Volvo CE's in-cab technology with Unicontrol's flexible 3D capabilities, the collaboration is positioned to meet growing expectations for efficiency, interoperability, and ease of use in construction technology.
