Free “Hot Topic” education sessions
World of Asphalt 2007 will be held March 19-22 at the Georgia International Convention Center in Atlanta, Georgia, and will feature exhibits of the latest asphalt-related equipment, technologies, products and services. It is geared to meet the business and training needs of asphalt, highway maintenance and traffic safety industry professionals from companies large to small.
This year the event has expanded the education it will offer by adding free “hot topic” seminars, two on Wednesday afternoon and one on Thursday afternoon. The sessions will focus on the theme of “Producing Environmentally Beneficial Pavements of the Future” and are being developed by the Asphalt Emulsion Manufacturers Association (AEMA) and the Asphalt Recycling and Reclaiming Association (ARRA). The two groups are show supporting organizations.
Attendees will also have access to two leading industry conferences: the Asphalt Pavement Alliance (APA) Asphalt Pavement Conference and the People, Plants and Paving Training Program.
World of Asphalt 2007 is also hosting certification courses: the Traffic Control Technician Course of the American Traffic Safety Services Association (ATSSA) and the OSHA 10-Hour Course for Construction Workers, a safety course developed by the U.S. Department of Labor.
In addition to education sessions over four days, World of Asphalt 2007 attendees can participate in a continuing-education tour of the research and testing facilities of the National Center for Asphalt Technology (NCAT).
Details and registration information are available at www.worldofasphalt.com, or toll-free at 800-867-6060.
Some examples of what you can find at the show are listed below.
Bergkamp’s patcher reduces material wasteBergkamp’s FP5 Flameless Pothole Patcher reduces material waste with its insulated 5.1-cubic-yard electric-heated hopper that keeps asphalt at a constant temperature and pliable for an extended period of time. Potholes repaired using the FP5 have an increased life over the “throw and roll” method. The damaged area is removed and squared off using the pavement breaker. The air and tack wand blows out any debris and applies the tack coating, which helps bind the new asphalt to the existing pavement. The material chute delivers the fresh, hot asphalt to the prepared area and the compaction plate (or optional single-drum roller) then consolidates the material evenly with the existing pavement.
Bergkamp Inc. #2092 Booth #755Critical information on paving projects and plant productioneRoutes, from Canadian company Minds Inc., provides coordination, logistic and communication efficiency on pavement projects. At anytime you can access critical information, about production, quality control, logistic, job status, actual and projected tonnages, fleet suitability, truck positions and trip times, machinery and equipment status, and more.
The system is very easy to install: a hot mix or concrete plant is connected in less than three hours without production or loading disruption, a paver is equipped in one hour and a truck in five minutes. Any brand and type of control system and machinery can be connected.
Barrett Paving Materials uses eRoutes at their 53 plants and the company reports: “eROUTES gives everyone authorized access to the critical information on the status of paving projects and plant productions. Questions like ‘How many loads have you sent to this job’, ‘How long has it been since you loaded a truck’, ‘How long is it taking to make a round trip’, and ‘How many tons have you shipped today’ are easily answered with access to the internet. “No longer will there be calls from several company employees trying to find out how it is going to be fielded by the plant . operator. With this information decisions are made to improve the efficiency of the operation. “Deciding on the number of trucks required is simplified and resources are not wasted. Planning the next day is a more exact science with the information available from the system.”
