ZQuip and Leica Geosystems introduce next-generation excavator
Modified excavator combines swappable battery tech with integrated machine control for sustainable operations

With an eye toward more sustainable construction operations, ZQuip and Leica Geosystems have unveiled a prototype excavator that merges clean energy with intelligent machine control. The result is a forward-looking solution for fleet owners and contractors seeking to meet sustainability goals without compromising productivity.
Developed through collaboration between ZQuip, a division of Moog Construction, and Leica Geosystems, part of Hexagon, the new 8-ton excavator prototype features a fully electric drive powered by ZQuip's swappable Modular Power System. This zero-emissions battery platform has been integrated into a modified Caterpillar 308 excavator, enabling operators to complete heavy-duty tasks with zero tailpipe emissions.
The machine's electric drivetrain is paired with Leica Geosystems' advanced 3D machine control technology, which allows operators to work with pinpoint accuracy. This integration provides real-time geospatial data and design visualization directly in the cab, enabling more efficient handling of payloads.
Battery power and precision, combined
The ZQuip Modular Power System addresses a common challenge in electrified construction: limited runtime. Its swappable battery modules reduce downtime and enable cross-compatibility across different machine types, offering flexibility for mixed fleets.
This solution meets the growing demand for powerful, low-emission technologies that integrate easily into job site operations. Pairing it with Leica Geosystems' machine control enhances precision, giving operators real-time data and enabling managers to monitor progress.
Cleaner job sites through smart systems
As the industry shifts toward decarbonization and data-driven practices, this prototype demonstrates how electrification and digital control can work together to improve efficiency and reduce environmental impact.
Following successful field testing in France, the collaborative system will be showcased at Bauma 2025 in Munich. Its debut at Bauma 2025 highlights a broader move toward cleaner, smart equipment.
